From the moment I started winning Mr Last’s quick-fire mental maths tests at school, I knew I had an analytical brain. I was also obsessed with taking things apart. Whether gadgets or motorbikes, I wanted to understand how all the parts fitted together and what could be improved. It’s a fascination that has carried over into my career. As a newly-qualified accountant, some 25 years ago, I wanted to understand the workings of a commercial business and where I could add the most value.
This analytical but creative approach opened up all sorts of amazing opportunities for me. In my 20+ years of serving as a Finance Director, both part time and full time, I have worked with 22 businesses, two of which were FTSE-listed, and been involved in 11 start-ups. I worked with two businesses from start-up right through to trade sales and three others that grew to £50m+ turnover.
As a Company Director myself since 1995, I have faced many of the same issues my clients now face. I understand the problems that come with trying to keep a handle on the increasingly complex finances of a growing company.
It’s why I strive to keep things simple and aim, as one client put it, to “translate complex financial matters into information that can be easily understood and used.
